Arthrogram

An arthrogram is a type of imaging where contrast solution, a special dye, is injected into your joint. Then using fluoroscopy, real-time X-ray imaging, pictures are taken to examine the area of concern. The dye helps highlight the area.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY PROCEDURE?

• Please let us know if you are, or may be, pregnant, or if you’ve had recent surgery.
• If you take insulin to manage your diabetes, please let your booking coordinator know. You may have juice one hour prior to your exam with your medication.
• If you are currently taking antibiotics, you will need to wait two days after your last dose to be able to have your injection done.
• Take all prescribed medications as directed.
• You are encouraged to have a small snack one hour before your exam.
• Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to allow enough time to check in with reception.
• Bring photo identification and your provincial health card.
• Wear comfortable clothes.
• Please do not bring children who require supervision.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY PROCEDURE?

• You may be asked to change into a gown or shorts, depending on the area to be imaged.
• A team member will review the consent form, explain procedure details, and answer any questions.
• We will then escort you to our treatment suite where you will meet the radiologist who will clean the skin and inject a local anesthetic, similar to the freezing you get at the dentist.
• We will then inject the contrast solution and your technologist will position you on the table. We will do our best to make you comfortable.
• Once we have successfully captured your images, you are free to leave.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

We do our best to have our radiologists interpret the information and forward the results to your doctor in a timely manner.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

This exam is covered under your Alberta Health Care Plan. It is not currently offered at our Saskatchewan clinics.
