Saskatchewan – Service Update

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, we’d like to share important information about the breast imaging available at our Regina clinic.

Diagnostic mammography – We provide low dose 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) resulting in a greater level of detail and clearer view of the breast tissue with the same small dose of radiation as the standard mammogram. 3D mammography is proven to be 40% more accurate in detecting invasive breast cancers compared to standard mammograms.

Diagnostic ultrasounds – A patient with a clinical concern (e.g. palp lump, new nipple inversion) over the age of 30, should receive a mammogram and an ultrasound. Under the age of 30, the patient should start with an ultrasound and then follow up with radiologist recommendations.

Breast density & ultrasounds – Dense breasts (Volpara D) with any additional risk factors such as family history may put a patient in higher risk categories. These patients are strong candidates for yearly screening. Additional risk factors for the patient should be considered, and a complete breast assessment may be the best path. Mammograms provide a very good internal picture of breast tissue. Even for dense breast tissue there are many details that can be seen better on a mammogram compared to ultrasound. Breast ultrasound is an excellent tool to take a closer look at an area of concern to see what’s inside a lump or area of dense tissue. It’s a good complement to mammography, especially for extremely dense breasts if the radiologist indicates it is necessary.

Breast implants – Patients with implants can have a diagnostic exam at our clinic. Patients with implants cannot have a screening exam through the SCA screening program as “special” additional views are required.

STAY CURRENT WITH REQUISITIONS

We routinely update our requisitions to enhance clarity and support more efficient patient care. You can download the updated requisitions for integration into your EMR system. If you require printed copies, please don’t hesitate to contact us. For effective patient service, it is important to ensure you have our most up-to-date requisitions. Visit physicians.radiology.ca for the most current versions.

STAT REQUESTS

Timely imaging is essential to patient care, and we remain committed to accommodating STAT requests whenever possible. However, with a recent rise in STAT-designated exams, we ask that this designation be reserved for truly urgent cases. This helps us prioritize critical patients and maintain timely service for all. Thank you for your continued partnership in delivering quality care.
