Bone Scan

A bone scan will help detect suspicious bony pathology not visible on Xray or CT and joint problems such as:

• Oncology:
  • Workup for primary bone tumours such as osteochondromas, giant cell tumors etc.
  • Assessment of skeletal masses
• Fractures and Stress fractures
• Radiologically occult fractures
• Hardware loosening/infection
• Infection/osteomyelitis
• Bony pain in region
• Bony metastatic disease
• Inflammatory Arthritis
• Paget’s disease

Bone Scan with SPECT/CT

A bone scan with SPECT/CT scan combines “SPECT” scan with a “CT” scan to help localize an area of abnormality activity that may be present on a 2-dimensional bone scan. SPECT stands for “single photon emission computed tomography”, and it basically uses the same technology as CT to create a 3-D image of the radioactivity inside the patient.​ This is often acquired them with non-diagnostic (low-dose CTs) to better localize activity.​ These CT images are fused with SPECT images to generate what is called a SPECT/CT.

SPECT/CT is used to examine the following”

• Guidance for possible pain management injections such as facetogenic vs discogenic activity
• Chronic back or neck pain to improve localization for any potential abnormal activity
• Ankle and foot
  • Osteochondral injuries
  • Chronic pain
  • Previous surgeries
• Scaphoid fractures negative on Xray

Thyroid Scans

Thyroid scans are only useful when the patients hyperthyroid (TSH) is low. If the if euthyroid or hypothyroid, nodules won’t have uptake​; biopsy of nodules in euthyroid or hypothyroid patients depends ONLY on ultrasound characteristics​. The Tc-99m O4(-) is the same diameter as an iodine atom and behaves similarly in the thyroid. We will Inject the patient with a small dose of TcO4 and image the thyroid​.

Mayfair recommends ordering a thyroid scan after or with a thyroid ultrasound and if the patients hyperthyroid (TSH) is low.

Hida Biliary Scan

HIDA Scans

HIDA scans evaluates the biliary system’s function (liver, bile ducts, gallbladder) for

• cholecystography or hepatobiliary scintigraphy
• Tc 99 m – hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid via IV
• Follows the course of bile and functional biliary pain syndromes.

It is also used to evaluate issues post-cholecystectomy.

Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI)

MPI is a non-invasive way to dete4ct and asses for coronary artery disease and determine the severity and the amount the heart is affected in patients. Mayfair is partnered with the internist at the Rockyview General hospital to provide comprehensive care to patients with possible cardiac issues.

Helpful Booking Tips

All requisitions will be protocoled and will include a SPECT-CT if it will add additional information. The correct phases will be chosen for a bone scan. Please included in the history if the patient as a history of cancer.
